District/International Accomplishments

ANNUAL REPORT. More than 3,000 humanitarians in over 100 Kiwanis Clubs across the State of New Jersey donated almost 2/3 of a million dollars, volunteered over 1,000 hours per week, and completed over 100 projects per month in the period from October 1, 2005, to September 30, 2006. During that period the New Jersey Kiwanis District also opened new Clubs in Summit and Metuchen. Major efforts by the New Jersey Kiwanis District included $70,000 towards the 10-year $500,000 Children's Specialized Hospital Project, major donations to each of several different autism organizations, sponsorship of the Kiwanis Youth Leadership Program, high school and college scholarships, grants for reading tutors in 3 Counties (Burlington, Camden, Gloucester), a grant for therapeutic horseback riding, a grant for Court Advocates for Children, and more. In a major effort by the Kiwanis-sponsored New Jersey Key Club District, high school students raised $92,000 for pediatric cancer through Alex's Lemonade Stand projects across the State.


DONATED $3,000. The New Jersey District Kiwanis Foundation sponsored the Inaugural New Jersey Shore Walk at Manasquan Beach in Manasquan, NJ. September 30, 2006.


AWARDED $5,000 TO PROJECT K.O.A.L.A. Kiwanis International Foundation is supporting young children, special needs children, and children of low-income families from parts of Morris, Warren, and Sussex Counties in Northwestern New Jersey by awarding a $5,000 grant in support of Project K.O.A.L.A., the Kiwanis Outdoor Active Learning Area, for the Mt. Olive Child Care and Learning Center, a NAEYC-accredited, 501(c)(3) registered public charity that has provided quality and affordable child care and family support services to the community regardless of income for the past 30 years. The grant application was submitted by the Kiwanis Club of Mount Olive. July, 2006.

With a focus on safety, Project K.O.A.L.A. will help build physical abilities such as strength and stamina, encourage social and emotional skills, stimulate verbal expression and emerging language aptitude, help foster good self-esteem and self-confidence, promote experiencing new challenges and problem-solving, cultivate learning about and appreciating nature, facilitate the exploration of new concepts through using the five senses, develop positive attitudes towards health and fitness, and support the intellectual development of an estimated 2,500-3,000 children over the next 20 years.

Project K.O.A.L.A. includes:

  • the Learning Lab (education)
  • a climber with safety loops (exercise, safety)
  • the KBP 4 Wheeler (social skills, imagination)
  • a tunnel (exercise)
  • a Tic-Tac-Toe panel (cooperative play, education, social skills)
  • a portion of the wood carpet safety surfacing (safety)


DISASTER RELIEF FUND TO AID INDONESIAN EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS. Kiwanis International Foundation, working through the districts and clubs within the affected areas, ensures that contributions will be directed to children, the most innocent of the victims. DONATED $50,000. The Foundation of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International presented the first installment of the $500,000 Children's Specialized Hospital Project at a press conference at the Toms River facility. New Jersey Kiwanis Foundation President Jack Wilson presented the check to Children's Specialized Hospital Foundation Executive Director Phil Salerno. Also in attendance were New Jersey Kiwanis District Governor Bruce Marich, Children's Specialized Hospital President & CEO Amy Mansue, Toms River Children's Specialized Hospital Medical Director Yvette Janvier, and many others. January 19, 2006.


DONATED $433,000 TO DISASTER RELIEF. Kiwanis International Foundation has released more than $433,000 from its Disaster Relief Fund in response to recent disasters, including: hurricane relief efforts in the gulf region, hurricane relief efforts in El Salvador and Mexico, earthquake relief in Pakistan, and tornado relief in southern Indiana. All funds have been forwarded through local Kiwanis clubs to assist local relief efforts. The Foundation currently has $200,000 of relief grants pending approval. November 23, 2005.


VOLUNTEERS MADE A DIFFERENCE. 3,088 volunteers in 110 Kiwanis Clubs across the State of New Jersey donated over $611,803, volunteered over 72,773 hours, and completed over 1,620 hands-on service projects during the 2004-2005 administrative year (10/1/2004-9/30/2005). Since data began being collected electronically in October 1, 2002, New Jersey Kiwanians have donated over $1,848,633, volunteered over 194,376 hours, and completed over 4,876 hands-on service projects. WALKED FOR AUTISM RESEARCH. The Foundation of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International sponsored the Sixth Annual Central New Jersey Walk F.A.R. for NAAR. October 23, 2005


VOLUNTEERISM SURVEY. According to a survey by Kiwanis International, 86 percent of North Americans believe one person can change the world, and a majority of respondents prefer volunteering to simply giving money to a cause. CLICK HERE to read the press release. September 30, 2005.


APPROVED $500,000 FOR CHILDRENS SPECIALIZED HOSPITAL. Children's Specialized Hospital Foundation unwrapped one of the largest gifts in its 114-year history when the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International approved a $500,000 grant to the Foundation's capital campaign, "The Building Begins with Children," at its Convention on August 27, 2005, in Wildwood, New Jersey. According to New Jersey Kiwanis Foundation President John Wilson, "the grant will be disbursed over a 10-year period, with $250,000 helping to fund the cost of construction of the new hospital building and $250,000 dedicated to establish an endowment fund to defray the cost of treatment for children who are uninsured or underinsured." RAISED $100,000 FOR IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDER (IDD). When Kiwanis International began the Worldwide Service Project, employees at the International Office were asked to contribute to the cause to rid the world of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). IDD is the world's leading cause of preventable mental retardation. The employees rose to the occasion and in 1993, pledged to contribute $50,000. Since that time, the pot has grown to $101,300, more than doubling the original pledge and continuing to climb. The money was contributed through individual contributions, and an annual employees' auction. August 11, 2005.


DONATED $17,000.00 FOR AUTISM. The Foundation of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International distributed $17,000 to The New Jersey Center for Outreach and Services for the Autism Community (COSAC), The National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR), Families for Autistic Children (FACES), Parents of Autistic Children (POAC) and Children's Specialized Hospital. The funds were raised at the Second Annual "An Evening at the Boardwalk" at Martell's Seabreeze Restaurant in Point Pleasant Beach on March 12, 2005. A proclamation from Camden County declaring April as Autism Awareness Month was read. April, 2005.


DONATED $250,000 FOR TSUNAMI RELIEF. The Kiwanis International Foundation Board of Trustees met February 12-13 in Indianapolis and awarded a grant of US$250,000 to Indonesia for a long-term relief project following the tsunami disaster. The funds are to help build a school, an orphanage, and a medical clinic in Indonesia, where Kiwanis clubs are helping to rebuild areas devastated by the December 26 tragedy. February 23, 2005.


APPROVED $5,000 FOR TUVA. The Foundation of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International for Tuva, subject to the availability of funds. February 2005.


REISSUED $10,000 FOR ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON. The Foundation of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International reissued $10,000 for Robert Wood Johnson. This was the final disbursement of a $500,000 grant that established the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Program. February 2005.


APPROVED $5,000 FOR AUTISM. The Foundation of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International approved $5,000 for a grant request from COSAC to sponsor their May 2005 conference in Atlantic City. December 2005.


DONATED $12,000.00 FOR AUTISM. The Foundation of the New Jersey District of Kiwanis International donated $12,000 to autism-centered groups such as National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR), New Jersey Center for Outreach Services to the Autistic Community (COSAC), Families for Autistic Children Support Foundation (FACS), Parents of Autistic Children (POAC), and Children's Specialized Hospital. March, 2004.
